How Sulfuric Acid Tanks Are Designed to Handle Harsh Chemicals Safely

Sulfuric acid is among the most widely used and most heavily corrosive chemicals in the world. From fertilizer production to petroleum refining, it is critical to countless industrial processes, and is therefore important to have on-hand. But storing sulfuric acid safely presents a challenge.

Sulfuric acid storage tanks have to be invulnerable to the compound’s highly reactive properties. At Protective Coatings Inc. (Proco), we specialize in creating the protective rubber linings and baked-on coatings that are essential to containing corrosive substances like sulfuric acid.

The Problem with Sulfuric Acid

Sulfuric acid  (H₂SO₄) is used in many industrial processes, including the production of fertilizers, batteries, and of other chemicals. It is also extremely hazardous, highly corrosive, and reacts violently to organic tissue, metals, and moisture. Storing sulfuric acid in an unlined metal tank is asking for trouble. Corrosion will be accelerated, leading to leaks and failure.

The Solution: Protective Linings

By far the most effective way to protect your tanks and pipes against sulfuric acid is to install a protective lining. Properly applied, a protective lining will serve as a seamless barrier between the acid and the structural walls of the tank. These linings may be elastomeric in nature, or a hard, glass-like coating that is actually baked on. .

  • Elastomeric linings are made with premium-grade natural rubber, bromobutyl, or chlorobutyl. They form a seamless barrier against the corrosive effects of sulfuric acid and other chemicals. They also add protection against vibrations and mechanical stresses, accommodating minor movement without compromising the integrity of the tank. This kind of lining is effective for sulfuric acid concentrations as high as 93%.
  • Baked-on coatings are preferred in certain cases. Phenolic or epoxy coatings are cured at high temperature to form a hard, smooth, rigid, glass-like finish that is impermeable to chemicals and resistant to mechanical abrasion. For high concentrations of sulfuric acid, these coatings are extremely effective when properly installed.

The Importance of Proper Installation

Which lining you choose depends on many factors. This decision should be made with guidance from established experts in the field. The professionals at Proco can advise you on the proper lining solution for your operation and ensure comprehensive installation adhering to best practices, including:

  • Tank design features, including ventilation, temperature control, and adequate inspection ports
  • Meticulous surface preparation for maximum adhesion
  • Precise curing for full-strength bond and optimal coating performance over a long service life
